Just recently, our spy photographers caught the images of the
upcoming 2017 Land Rover Discovery which is set to replace the
Land Rover LR4 in the US market.
According to the images, the automaker has done away with the
body-on-frame construction on the outgoing LR4 and replaced it
with an aluminum monocoque which is used in the current models
of Range Rover. This new platform will result in significant
weight reduction thus helping boost its fuel economy and
2017 Land Rover Discovery Exterior
Due to the new chassis, the Discovery will boast a more stylish
exterior which derives its inspiration from its smaller brother
“the Discovery Sport”. However, the sleek styling does not
erode its signature rough and rugged SUV design synonymous with
the Land Rover name. Its tall greenhouse shape with large
windows is carried over as well as the stepped roof.
Underneath the heavy camouflage you will find a soft front
fascia and a clamshell bonnet. There are also new front air
intakes and redesigned headlights and taillights at the rear.
The area around the C-pillars and the rear has also been
modified to look more like the smaller Discovery Sport. The
rear window will have a raked angle and the window itself will
be framed by a spoiler. It also features an air ride suspension
which helps keep ground clearance in check more so in off-road
The current model has a 10.2 inch ground clearance setting
which will most likely carry over to the new model. Overall,
the vehicle will have a modern and sportier look than any
Discovery model before it.
Due to the reduced curb weight and improved engines, the Land
Rover Discovery could increase its towing capacity from the
current 7,716 pounds.
2017 Land Rover Discovery Interior
The spy photos in our possession do little to reveal the
interior styling. But one thing is sure though, the new
generation Discovery will get an all-new interior styling which
is modern and made from quality materials. Though it won’t be
as stylish as that of the Range Rover, it will be a huge
improvement from the one on the outgoing models.
The vehicle will accommodate 7 passengers across a three-row
seating arrangement. The second and third rear rows will have
an improved folding capability to expand cargo space. It
is not clear if a split tailgate will be featured as of this
writing. Other features include a transparent bonnet
technology, laser lights technology and remote parking. These
are some of the features we highly expect to be featured.
In addition, the automaker will add other features on the cabin
including modern tech features such as Smartphone integration,
Bluetooth connectivity, USB ports and many more as well as an
array of safety features.
Land Rover has not made public details about the upcoming
Discovery’s power-train. However, we expect the automaker to
continue with its tradition of forced induction intake systems
which feature a turbocharger on diesel engines and a
supercharger on petrol engines.
There are also rumors that the Discovery will offer a 2.0 L
Ingenium range of drive-trains for base level models while 3.0
L turbocharged diesel and 3.0 L turbocharged Petrol engines
will power top trims. Maybe even the most powerful
supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 from the previous generation, be
boosted with a few horsepower.
Anyway, the expected acceleration is excellent for this class
of vehicle, from 0-60 mph new Discovery arrives for about 7
seconds, and reaches a top speed of 125 mph.
A hybrid drive-train is also likely. The engine being fronted
is a 2.0 L Ingenium engine mated with electric combined with
electric motors and will have a range of up to 20 miles on
electric power alone but at low speeds.
Power will be channeled to all wheels via a ZF-sourced 8-speed
automatic transmission system. We will keep you posted once we
have more information on the 2017 Land Rover Discovery engine
Price and release date
Land Rover has not released any information about the new
model’s release date or price. But according to rumors, the
price will largely remain similar to the outgoing model. The
current LR4 starts at $ 50,400 and goes up to $ 60,600 for the
top HSE LUX.
The 2017 Land Rover Discovery will compete against the new
models of Audi Q7, BMW
X5 and Volvo XC90.
